What is child and adolescent psychiatry?

Child and adolescent psychiatry is the medical specialty focused on the emotional, behavioral, and developmental health of young people. Children and teens experience many of the same conditions adults do, but symptoms often look different. A depressed teen may seem irritable rather than sad. An anxious child may complain of stomachaches or refuse to go to school. Understanding those differences takes specialized training.

Common reasons families seek a child psychiatrist include:

How Dr. Green can help

Dr. Green completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Menninger School of Psychiatry and has more than 40 years of medical experience. He knows how to talk with kids and teens in a way that feels respectful, not clinical. His evaluation brings together the young person's own perspective, input from parents, developmental and medical history, and, when helpful, information from schools or other providers.

What treatment looks like

Every treatment plan is family-centered. Depending on the situation, care may include individual psychotherapy for the child or teen, guidance for parents on routines, communication, and behavior, and coordination with schools for accommodations. Follow-up visits track progress at home and at school. As teens mature, Dr. Green gradually involves them more directly in decisions about their own care.

Is medication involved?

Only when it is clearly helpful. Many children and teens improve with therapy and family support alone. When symptoms are significant, medications such as SSRIs for anxiety or depression, or stimulant and non-stimulant medications for ADHD, can be effective and safe with careful oversight. Dr. Green starts with the lowest effective dose, reviews benefits and risks with parents, and monitors growth, sleep, appetite, and mood closely.

Common questions about child psychiatry

How do I know if my child needs a psychiatrist?

Consider an evaluation if emotional or behavioral concerns last more than a few weeks, interfere with school, friendships, or family life, or if your child talks about self-harm. Your pediatrician can also be a helpful first conversation.

Will my teen's sessions be confidential?

Teens generally do better when they can speak openly. Dr. Green explains confidentiality at the start: most details stay private, while safety concerns are always shared with parents. This balance builds trust while keeping families informed.
