What is a psychiatric evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is an in-depth assessment of your mental health, performed by a medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry. Its purpose is to understand what you're experiencing, reach an accurate diagnosis, and recommend a treatment plan that fits your life. For many people it's the most important appointment in their care, because everything that follows builds on it.
What Dr. Green will ask about
Dr. Green has more than 40 years of medical experience, and he takes the time to understand the full picture. Expect to talk about:
- What brings you in, and how long it has been going on
- Mood, anxiety, sleep, appetite, energy, and concentration
- Past mental health treatment and medications, including what helped and what didn't
- Medical conditions and current medications, which can affect mood and interact with psychiatric drugs
- Alcohol, cannabis, and other substance use
- Family history of mental health conditions
- Relationships, work or school, and recent stressors
For children and teens, Dr. Green meets with both the young person and their parents. With permission, he may also review information from schools, pediatricians, or previous providers.
How to prepare
- Bring a list of current medications and doses, including supplements
- Gather names of past psychiatric medications, if you remember them
- Have prior records or test results available, if you have them
- Write down your questions and what you hope to get out of treatment
What happens after the evaluation
By the end of the evaluation, Dr. Green will share his diagnostic impressions and discuss treatment options in plain language. Those options may include psychotherapy, medication, lifestyle changes, further testing, or a combination. You'll leave with a clear plan and a follow-up appointment to track progress.
